(Rock Hill, S.C) — Fraternities and Sororities at Winthrop University often host events that aim to help the Rock Hill community.

For example, the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority hosted a community Kickball tournament last semester that collected school supplies for students around Rock Hill.

In order for Winthrop students to participate in this event, each was required to bring at least two school supplies of their own and donate them to local schools.

Both fraternity and sorority members encourage students outside of Greek Life to come and get involved in the community by participating in the events that these organizations host throughout the school year.

“We actually aid the community in multiple different ways.” said Nicholas Guinyard, a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

“This event in particular that we just did was a kickball tournament, but we actually did raise a lot of school supplies for the elementary and middle schools in the area,” Guinyard said.

The Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity also hosted a cookout that collected school supplies. The fraternity also does volunteer work at nearby schools.

“Every Saturday or every now and again, sometimes we volunteer at the Manna House School Pantry where we kind of give back to the community and to people who need it the most,” Guinyard said.

Members say people learn about volunteer or fundraising opportunities by following the group’s social media posts or by looking for flyers that can be seen posted around campus.

“Come to our events, get to know us and we get to know you and then possibly one day you might end up in our fraternity or sorority,” said Olivia Newton, an Alpha Kappa Alpha member.

“You just gotta go to the events and get involved,” Newton said.
