(Rock Hill, S.C.) — Students and faculty at Winthrop University are working to make sure hunger is not something their classmates have to worry about.
The Food Box, located in 302 Dalton Hall, provides free groceries and basic necessities to students and staff who may be struggling with food insecurity.
Organizers say the goal is to make resources easily accessible in a supportive and judgment-free environment.
“It started about three years ago,” said Debbi Pickens, the pantry coordinator. “It was student-led, I believe by the student nutrition group here on campus, with funds that they had. It has grown and we have rearranged it this year to improve the flow.”
Pickens said the number of students using the pantry changes throughout the semester, but on average, around five to 10 students visit each week.
Students involved with the Food Box say it serves a wide range of needs beyond just food.
“It’s a resource for students and staff to come use whenever they need,” said Annabel Chevallard, a graduate student in Human Nutrition department. “We get local produce, shelf-stable foods, and all sorts of supplies, including toiletries that people can take as they need.”
For many students, the pantry represents more than just a campus service — it reflects a growing awareness of an issue that often goes unnoticed.
“I have friends who deal with this problem every day,” said student Conner Martin, a business administration major. “It’s definitely a good cause, and I hope to do my part.”
As awareness of food insecurity on college campuses continues to grow, Winthrop’s Food Box provides consistent support for students who need it.
