(Rock Hill, S.C.) – Winthrop University actively encourages its students to study internationally and as a result, more and more students are studying abroad.

Depending on the program chosen, students have the opportunity to live in another country, discover a new culture, and learn a new language, while strengthening their skills.

Studying abroad can also represent an opportunity to stand out in a highly competitive job market.

“Studying abroad helps develop independence and confidence. Our students see the world differently after that experience and it prepares them to adapt in an increasingly global economy,” said LeAnn Lowrey, the associate director of Winthrop’s International Center.

The programs and destinations can vary from a summer term to a full year at partner universities across Europe, Asia or Latin America.

For many students, the appeal goes beyond academics.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It’s the only moment when we are free enough to live this experience. You grow personally, make friends from all over the world, and come back with eyes full of stars and a head full of memories,” said Sally Barakat, a biology major.

However, some families worry about the cost of studying abroad, including travel expenses and tuition fees.

“We encourage students to seek information. There are scholarships and financial aid opportunities. Winthrop is working with partner schools to reduce costs and make the experience more accessible to more students,” said Shalesa Grey, the program assistant for the mass communication department.

Winthrop officials say scholarships are helping to reduce barriers, but they recognize that affordability remains a challenge.

Nationally, participation in study abroad programs is steadily increasing, according to the Institute of International Education.
