(Rock Hill, S.C.) – Winthrop University’s Office of Sustainability and Environmental Science Department have been working collaboratively over the past year to create long term solutions to keep the campus green and involve more students and faculty in the process.

“Across campus there are centralized stations with recycling and trash altogether. This is a part of a plan to make it more convenient for folks to recycle,” said Sustainability Coordinator Chris Johnson.

The Environmental Science Department encourages its students to be involved in its sustainability-based initiatives on campus and rely on its students to keep the initiatives progressive.

“With us and the nutrition department on campus, we have a community garden. Students remain involved with efforts toward sustainability on campus and trying to make this updated with more modern resources,” said Scott Wertz, chair of the environmental sciences department.

Emma Bonasia, a sophomore environmental studies major, said she is annoyed by running into messes made by fellow students.

“Honestly, I think one major thing students could do is just stop littering. We’ll do campus cleanups and we’ll fill bags and bags and bags,” Bonasia said. “Throw your stuff away and if it needs to be recycled put it in the right bin.”

Officials say these sustainability initiatives can bring the campus together by using safe and durable measures to make Winthrop more environmentally friendly.

In recent years, Winthrop has been recognized for its sustainable practices through education and awareness.
